The Morning Call
Teachers in Guinea who last week agreed to suspend their month-old strike following an offer by religious leaders to mediate talks with the government will today have their demands tabled before President Alpha Conde. According to the deputy leader of the teachers’ union, Aboubacar Soumah, the decision to suspend the one month old strike was because of religious leaders intervention. Soumah had called for a teachers’ strike on November 13 over salary increases, which drew thousands of pupils onto the streets in support. But last week, and in front of a crowd of about 300 teachers gathered at the union’s offices in capital Conakry, Soumah urged his peers to return to school and resume classes.
